Lay Ministers

Lay Ministers are called by the Book of Common Prayer to "take their place in the life, worship, and governance of the Church."

Lectors read the Scripture Lesson in the Church's liturgy as appointed to do so by the celebrant or officiant. No license is required for this ministry.

Eucharistic Ministers are licensed by the Bishop to administer the chalice at services where there are not a sufficient number of priests and deacons present to do so. Service in this category at the Cathedral includes lay readers, chalice bearers, and sub-deacons.

Lay Readers are licensed by the Bishop, after a period of study, to read the Old Testament lesson the Epistle, and the Intercessions during the Eucharist.

Chalice Bearers are Lay Readers who have undergone further study and are licensed to administer the chalice during the Eucharist.

Sub-deacons are Chalice Bearers selected by the Dean to assist the celebrant during the celebration of the Holy Eucharist.
